Head Lice Control And Treatment Options
Lice infection is very common among young children, especially the ones who are starting school. This is because lice are commonly caused by contact to other children or even adults. While the head lice prefer the human heads with hair as their living place, it is important to know that lice infection in not a medical disease. Lice feed on the human blood. But they don’t even spread diseases like the bacteria and viruses do. Having lice on your head is not a thing to get terrified about as they can be removed.
While head lice are not a life-threatening menace, they are annoying and a social negative because of the way they make your scalp itch. Even if you eliminate the adults, their eggs and nits can give you the same problem all over again. So how to get rid of lice and all their eggs and nits? While conventional soap and shampoo are not effective, several specialized ways to expunge lice infestations exist.
A manual search to find and kill head lice and nits will be effective but is slow, laborious, and frustrating. Medicated shampoos will help kill them. Using a lice comb on wet hair will force lice and nits out of hair so that they can be disposed of. In fact, such nit combs, as they’re sometimes called, are more effective than most medical treatment since many lice are now immune to all current forms of chemical treatment that are used to kill them.
After you’ve finished using the lice comb, carefully clean out any trapped material that has lodged in the comb and wash it with running warm water. Dry it thoroughly with a hair dryer from a distance to avoid melting the comb. Then wash and dry the infested head and repeat the combing routine, since a single combing is not sufficient to locate and remove all of the head lice and their nits.
To guard against fresh infestation, wash all the bedspreads, pillow covers, clothing and towels that have been used recently, in hot water and dry them in a hot dryer. Things that cannot be washed can be sealed tight and kept away for at least three days. Any lice and nits in those things will die, as they cannot live without human blood for more than a day. Do not forget to give a similar treatment to hats, scarves and caps too.
Now you need to make sure that anything touching the infested head is clean- combs, brushes, caps, hairpins, and so on. Make sure that children know the importance of using their own brushes, combs, and pillows. Color coding these items has been shown to be effective. The entire process should be repeated every seven days for about a month to ensure that the infestation is truly gone for good.
Head lice can be acquired by contact by children. Adults coming into contact with the children can get lice as well. People infested with lice are irritated by the lice because they itch. So, how to get rid of lice? You can use fine-toothed combs called lice comb on moistened hair to remove the lice and nits. Wash and dry the head and repeat the whole routine of combing. After combing with this special comb, remove all debris from the comb and wash it by holding it under running water, preferably warm water, and dry thoroughly.
